A show-stopping blast of color, pattern and rhythm, the Wave Cardigan can be part of your wardrobe within a couple of months.
Denise Bell of Lost City Knits will walk students through the project from cast on to blocking, taking you beyond the basic plain beginner sweaters to a finished garment that will go with almost every outfit in your everyday wardrobe.
The Wave Cardigan was designed by Toshiyuki Shimada and Grace Williamson for the 2011 book Knit Real Shetland from Jamieson & Smith. This is the sweater Denise reaches for time and again and that lives on the back of her chair ready to be grabbed on the way out the door for months at a time. Over 8 sessions (plus a bonus ninth for show and tell) starting in January 2026, students will start from the cast on edge knitting up to the drop shoulder, and down the sleeves creating a beautiful all-over patterned sweater customized to fit their body, learning many concepts during the process, including —
Two-color ribbing.
Determining the length of a sweater.
Calculating armhole depth based on your measurements.
Creating a sturdy shoulder seam.
Adding steek bridges and cutting steeks.
Picking up and knitting sleeves.
Adding buttonholes to two-color ribbing.
Planning sleeve decreases based on your desired sleeve length.
Afterthought pockets (optional)
The Workshop are held over fourteen weeks via Zoom. The live sessions will be recorded and available until the day before the next session.
Class will be held from 7:00 to 9:00pm Central Time.

There will be a bonus Show and Tell on April 22. Office Hours will be available to individual students by appointment.
Student kits using Jamieson & Smith yarn and pattern are available for enrolled students to purchase. The sweater comes in sizes 35″, 38″, 41″, 43.5″, 46.5″, and 51″ and can be modified to a larger size with teacher assistance. Kits will contain the original brown shades for the ribbing. (Sizes 46.5″ and 51″ should purchase an extra ball of shade 80 for the ribbing.) 2025 kits will be shipped as purchased – plan accordingly to have these arrive in time to swatch before the first class. (The kits are an excellent holiday gift from your loved ones!)
The physical book Knit Real Shetland, which includes the Wave Cardigan pattern, is out of print but a pdf pattern will be purchased and provided to you a few weeks before class begins.
Class cost is $250 for the 8 sessions. There will be a limit of fifteen students. Office Hour Zooms will be available to students by appointment. Students must have some colorwork knitting experience, as well as sweater knitting experience. This is an intermediate/advanced level class.
Cancellation Policy – Half the cost of the class can be refunded until two weeks before the first class. After that, half the cost can be refunded only if we are able to fill the vacated space.
