How is it that when I put the newly finished sock on my right foot the incredibly warm wool sock on my left foot – the one that filled me with comfort from the foot up when I slipped them on early in the morning – is somehow not nearly as warm as the new and decidedly prettier sock?
Must be first sock magic.
The first DVD sock was bound off at 9:00pm last night and it’s mate was cast on by 9:10pm. No Second Sock Syndrome this time around. I’m nippin’ that rascal in the bud.
I’m using a plain vanilla sock recipe – toe up and let the yarn provide the fun color changes.
Starting with a Turkish Cast On (which is pretty easy once you get the hang of it and allows you to avoid kitchener – something I appreciate), then stockinette to a short row heel, followed by a stockinette leg roughly the same length as my foot, an inch or two of 2×2 ribbing and finally Jeny’s Surprisingly Stretchy Bind Off from Knitty.
The yarn is the Lost City Knits Sock in colorway Sedum (colorway out of stock) and I’m using size 2US/2.75mm dpns.
There it is… the first of the absolutely-gonna-be-a-pair of DVD socks.
Thanksgiving we decided on a simple meal for three here on the farm. No big spread, just turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, seasoned green beans, and rolls. Only on the herbed butter did I deviate from the standard offerings – I mixed fresh minced rosemary, minced garlic, and added little honey for a sweet and savory butter. It was a hit on the hot rolls.
For the dessert I thought a little something simple that I could make ahead would do nicely. I pulled out my old wooden recipe box and dug through until I found the recipe for the first pie I ever made. Looking at my big round handwriting made me chuckle. Things have changed, but it’s recognizable as my hand and it’s obvious that I took my time to make sure it was clear and legible. Not such a bad thing since here I am over 35 years later pulling it out for a holiday dinner.
In ninth grade home-ec class with Ms West we had to make our own graham cracker crust but I cheated this time and employed the elves at Keebler.
